TOBACCO RESOURCES
Effective July 20, 2005 OTC tobacco use cessation products (including the NRT patch and gum) are now on the covered benefit list for Medicaid patients. No prior approval is needed, however, physicians will need to write a prescription for the NRTs to be covered by Medicaid.

1 800 QUIT-NOW, is the number to call to access the North Carolina quitline. It will become effective in October of this year, and will accept calls from 8:00 a.m. until midnight seven days a week. The 1 800 QUIT NOW quitline is for everyone and is jointly funded by the NC Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch and the NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission. Until the NC quitline is operational, the 1 800 QUIT NOW number will link people to the national quitline, which is available M-F 9:00-4:30. Counselors are available on the quitline and information can be provided and materials mailed. Services are available in English and Spanish.

It only takes 30 seconds to refer your patients to a toll-free tobacco-cessation quitline. Recent studies have proved that quitlines can double a smoker's chance of quitting.

While quantities last, you can get free plastic quitline cards, available in packages of 200 (shipping charges will apply). The cards carry the number for the National Network of Tobacco Cessation Quitlines: (800) QUIT-NOW. By calling this number, patients receive immediate advice on quitting, referrals to other sources and an offer to have materials mailed to them.

To order by phone, call (800) 944-0000 and request item #966. Maximum order is 20 packages.

AAFP ASK and ACT
The AAFP's tobacco cessation program, "Ask and Act," encourages family physicians to ASK about the tobacco use habits of all of their patients, then to ACT on that information.

Research evaluated by the AAFP Tobacco Cessation Advisory Committee at the March 2005 Tobacco Cessation Summit indicated that 70 percent of physicians ask their patients about tobacco use, and about 40 percent take action to help those who use tobacco.

Through the Ask and Act program, AAFP members have access to a variety of resources to help patients kick the habit. The materials – some new and some obtained from other sources – are posted online for practices, residencies, family medicine departments and AAFP constituent chapters to download.
